What is an accredited mental health social worker?

Accredited Mental Health Social Workers in Australia and Medicare Rebates

In Australia, Accredited Mental Health Social Workers (AMHSWs) bring compassion, deep listening, a social justice lens and evidence-based care to people navigating mental health challenges. Recognised by the Australian Government, AMHSWs are eligible to provide services under the Medicare Better Access Initiative, which means clients can receive a Medicare rebate for therapy sessions—making mental health support more accessible and affordable.

To become accredited, social workers must demonstrate advanced training and experience in mental health assessment and intervention. AMHSWs use a range of Focused Psychological Strategies (FPS) such as Narrative Therapy, Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), mindfulness, interpersonal therapy, and trauma-informed approaches. What sets AMHSW’s apart our practice being grounded in a holistic viewpoint—seeing each person in the context of their relationships, community, culture, lived experience and the impacts systems and oppression have on our communities.

Whether someone is living with with anxiety, depression, trauma, grief, or life transitions, an AMHSW walks alongside with care and respect. Through their dual focus on clinical skills and social justice, they offer a safe space to heal and grow—and for many, that first session covered by Medicare can be the beginning of meaningful change.
